CBD, CBG, CBN & More: What the Cannabinoids Actually Do

THC gets the attention, but CBD, CBG, CBN and the others shape how products feel. A plain guide to the minor cannabinoids.

THC gets most of the attention, but cannabis contains many other cannabinoids, and knowing the main ones helps explain why different products feel different even when THC is similar. (General information, not medical advice.)

Meet the cannabinoids beyond THC

  • CBD (cannabidiol). Not intoxicating the way THC is. Some people use it alongside higher-THC products and report a less intense experience; research on these effects is still developing. The FDA has approved only one CBD drug, for specific seizure disorders.

  • CBG (cannabigerol). Its acid form, CBGA, is the precursor the plant uses to make THCA and CBDA, which is why it’s called the “mother cannabinoid.” Non-intoxicating and usually present in small amounts.

  • CBN (cannabinol). Forms as THC breaks down over time. Mildly psychoactive, much weaker than THC. Often marketed for sleep, but evidence is limited.

  • CBC (cannabichromene). Non-intoxicating, less studied, present in small amounts in most flower.

  • THCA and CBDA. The acidic forms in raw flower. Not intoxicating until heated (heat converts THCA into THC), which is why raw cannabis and certain products behave differently before and after heat.

Most dispensary products are THC-dominant with smaller amounts of the others, and those ratios are part of what makes products feel different. Lab reports (COAs) list the major ones, another reason to look at more than just Total THC. Looking for a particular profile or a more balanced ratio? We can help you compare.
